The 17-year-old Dora (Catherine Spaak), who lost her parents at an early age, returns to her hometown of Parma after five years spent with her priest uncle in the country. She finds temporary accommodation with a friend of her late mother’s. Going against the conventions of her environment, she does not allow herself to be locked into a centuries-old moral system but tries to live life on her own terms. LA PARMIGIANA is a Commedia all'italiana that depicts Dora’s disappointments and loneliness as she develops from girl to woman. With LA VISITA and IO LA CONOSCEVO BENE, it forms a trilogy, in which Pietrangeli creates a modern portrait of contemporary women. (hjf)
